Solar Energy System to Be Installed at Ark School
Solar Technologies leads volunteers to enhance school’s science curriculum

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (Nov. 21, 2003) – Students at The Ark School will begin to learn more about harnessing the sun’s energy thanks to a new solar-electric system being installed atop one of its science classrooms Nov. 21st.

Solar Technologies will lead a group of volunteers from Cabrillo College’s solar energy class to install the system, which will be used to show students how solar power is generated and how knowledge of clean energy can lead to jobs after graduation. Leading the effort will be co-owner Bob Evans, Solar Technologies’ chief engineer.

“ We’re on the verge of creating a world that’s no longer dependent on fossil fuels that pour millions of tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere each year,” said Roger DeNault, founder of Solar Technologies. “What better place than Santa Cruz to give the next generation the tools they need to build a society powered by clean, renewable energy.”

Ark School science teacher Peter Deutsch initiated the project. The photovoltaic array may ultimately be linked to other solar schools around the world, allowing students to compare the results of their schools' solar-energy system and share ideas about renewable energy concepts.
The system, paid for by a grant arranged by local solar activist Joe Jordan, is 1.5 KW in size, consisting of 12 Kyocera KC125G, high output PV panels and 1 Sunny Boy SWR1800U inverter.

The mission of Solar Technologies is to promote renewable energy use locally and across the United States by giving people the means to end their dependence on fossil fuels. DeNault started Santa Cruz County’s first solar energy company in the 1970s. Earlier this year, Solar Technologies installed the largest photovoltaic array in the County at West Marine Products and just a week ago completed the 3rd largest array locally at Barry Swenson’s Live Oak Business Park.
