With our abundant amount of sunshine and generous solar rebates, it's no wonder that California ranks first in solar installations in the country. But we are very close to the end of a 10-step rebate program. We are approaching step eight as rebate amounts decrease in value at each level.
 | What is the California Solar Initiative?

The California Solar Initiative is the solar rebate program for customers of the utility companies: PG&E, SCE, and SDG&E. It was put into place to make solar more affordable to encourage the use of clean energy.
| How does it work?
|
Customers earn cash rebates based on the size and performance of their solar system. Some of the factors that affect performance are location, angle, panel tilt, shading, and the efficiency of equipment. Proper system design ensures the greatest return, and systems that provide maximum solar generation are rewarded accordingly.
There are two ways to take advantage of rebates.
| Expected Performance-Based Buy-down (EPBB). Smaller systems receive an upfront, capacity-based incentive that is adjusted based on expected system performance.
| | Performance Based Incentive (PBI). Larger systems receive incentives based on their actual performance over the course of five years.

The program is divided into ten rebate levels, or steps, that decrease in value when a preset quota of solar is achieved. Rebate level information can be tracked online at http://csi-trigger.com.
| How do You Quality for a Solar Rebate?

There are some requirements to earn a rebate on your solar system to ensure that California achieves its goals toward a sustainable future.
Systems must be installed by an approved, licensed installer. They must also be in conformance with the manufacturer's specifications and with all applicable electrical and building code standards.
Qualified contractors are your key to getting the most productive PV system for your home or business. An experienced professional will be able to evaluate factors that impact performance and design a properly-sized system to maximize your rebate amount AND future savings.
Rebates will be dropping any time as reservations approach the current level limit. Rates are locked in when you sign up, but you have up to one year to install your system. Reserving your incentive early ensures access to the highest rebate amounts.
