How Does Solar Energy Work to
Power Your Home?
|
|
| |
It may be hard to imagine how to use sunlight to power your home and never having to pay for electricity again. A solar power system creates clean, pollution-free energy that reduces or eliminates your electric bill, and the process is not as complicated as it seems.
Solar Panels. Solar energy is produced by photovoltaic solar panels (PV modules) that convert energy from sunlight directly into electricity. The panels are mounted on your roof or on the ground in a manner that will maximize the amount of sunlight striking them throughout the day. They have no moving parts and require no maintenance.
Inverters. The solar panels are connected to the electrical system in your home or business via an inverter. The job of the inverter is to convert the direct current (DC) from the panels to the alternating current (AC), used in your home to power electrical items.
Energy Use. As the electricity flows into your electrical system, it is either used in your building or “sold” back to your electric utility service, which is commonly referred to as “making your meter run backwards”. Your system naturally produces more energy in the summer than in the winter so it’s like banking credits to use when you need them within a one-year cycle.
The savings from your solar powered system will be reflected on your energy bill.
