Is Solar A Better Investment Than
The Stock Market?

The Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008 improved the Residential Renewable Energy Tax Credit so that you can take 30% off the cost of a solar power system with no $2,000 cap, effective January 1, 2009. This has improved the economics of owning a solar power system.

Investing in a solar power system for your home is generally a better deal than investing in the stock market for the following reasons:

High Rate of Return – Your solar power system generates anywhere from 8% - 20% tax-free returns. Because it is an income generator, it adds value to your home in a way that can be quantified. Stocks do not add value to your home. The more power you use, the better your return will be.

Low Risk – Solar panels are guaranteed from 20-25 years but are expected to really last twice that. There is minimal risk as long as the sun shines. As we've seen recently, the stock market is anything but low risk.

Inflation Protection – Solar power systems provide a hedge against yearly utility inflation by locking in your cost of electricity.

After-Tax Return - Your solar power system is producing power which is equal to generating dollars. As long as the sun shines your returns are virtually guaranteed. You don’t pay taxes on the PG&E bill money that you are saving. Your stock returns are pre-tax.

Public Incentives – The California Solar Initiative will pay you up to $1.90 per watt to install a solar power system. You’ll get a federal tax credit of 30% off the cost of your solar power system after rebate. You’ll also get a 5-year accelerated depreciation on commercial solar power systems. You are not paid to buy stocks.

Green Investment – Your solar power system helps the planet by reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

What other low-risk, inflation-hedged, tax-free investments are available to you and what are they paying?

Do they also provide a huge environmental benefit?
