Are Solar Powered Homes Selling
Faster in a Slow Market?
| |
| | With a challenging economy, the housing market has seen a change in buyers' attitudes. The value scale has shifted from shiny countertops to energy efficient systems that actually put money back in their pockets.
| |
| | According to a survey prepared for the California Energy Commission, the majority of homeowners in California indicated that they would be willing to pay more for a home equipped with solar. They would also be more interested in a home that has a renewable energy system than in one that doesn't.
A recent report by the California Energy Commission's New Solar Homes Partnership reported on home buying preferences.
 | 91% of Californians view a home's energy efficiency as an important factor when considering the purchase of a new home.
| | 70% said that the cost of the monthly electricity bill also ranked high in their
buying decision.
| Environment California Research and Policy Center commissioned a survey to find out how homeowners feel about living with solar.
 | 92% said that they would recommend solar to a friend.
| | 93% reported that if they were to buy another home, they would prefer a solar powered home again.
| | 84% of homeowners felt that a solar PV system would be an important selling point.
|
| |
| | Fueled by the 30% tax credit, consumer awareness of solar powered homes is growing, especially in markets with costly utility rates such as California. Solar has also become more affordable with systems paying themselves off in 5-7 years. The ongoing benefit of a home with a hedge against electric rate inflation is being recognized as a valuable commodity.
| |
| | Not only does a solar system reduce your energy costs it adds value to your home. The added value has been estimated at 20 times the annual energy cost savings, according to The Appraisal Journal.
| |
| | With a market flooded with unsold homes, this is an edge that sellers can't afford to ignore.
