What Type of Solar Power System
Will Work for Your Home?
|
|
| |
When you understand a little about how solar energy works, it is easier to choose a system that will meet your needs. A solar powered home can generate between 75 and 100% of its own power, resulting in immediate savings now, and increased savings in the future as the cost of electricity increases with inflation. In today's economy, everyone appreciates a positive cash flow.
Our previous newsletter talked about how solar energy works to power your home. Now that you know the basics, we will explain the types of solar energy systems available.
About Solar Power Systems
Unless you are in a remote area with no utility service, you will probably use a grid-tied system. Grid-tied power systems are designed to operate with your utility service and are the most common types of installations in our area. The solar panels are connected to the utility's grid via the building’s electrical supply. Electricity either powers the building or is sold back to the utility company.
Mounting Locations
Solar electric power systems can be installed anywhere that receives sunlight. There are various ways to locate solar panels on your property with the best location depending on your individual circumstances.
Roof Mount
Systems are usually mounted on the roofs of residential and commercial buildings if the structure has sufficient roof space with unobstructed southern exposure.

Ground Mount
Ground mounts are used when rooftop space is limited or the solar exposure is insufficient.

Fixed Mounts vs. Tracking Mounts
A fixed mount is stationary and provides a static orientation towards the sun. This option provides the best average exposure throughout the year.
A tracking mount follows the sun throughout the day (single-axis) or the year (dual-axis). This provides optimal orientation of the panel to the sun.
