What is Time-of-Use Metering and
How Does it Affect My Electric Bill?
| | | | Did you know that a little time management can create additional cash flow from your solar energy system? By generating your own clean energy with solar, you already save on your electric bills, but you can actually increase the power of those savings. Here's how it works.
 |
Net Metering. Let's start with net metering, which measures the difference between the electricity you buy from your utility and the electricity your solar system generates and feeds back to the electric grid. When you generate more than you use, your electric meter spins backwards and you bank the credits for later use over a one-year cycle. Your meter keeps track of this "net" difference.
| | Time-of-Use Metering. With time-of-use metering, your electric rates are determined by the time of day that electricity is consumed. Electricity used during peak hours, on summer weekday afternoons, costs significantly more than usage at night or in the mornings.
| Your solar power system is actually at its best during peak hours, generating most of your electricity during this time.
If you generate more than you use during the afternoon, the electricity you put on the grid is valued at a higher price than electricity you consume in the late evening or early morning.
With a properly-sized solar system you can sell high and buy low by moving as much power consumption as possible to off-peak hours.
A few simple changes can make a big difference, including: re-timing your pool pump,
using programmable thermostats for air conditioning, doing laundry at night or on weekends, turning on your dish washer at night when you go to bed, or just turning off the tv when you are not watching it.
How much will you save?
When time-of-use metering is coupled with net metering, you can offset three hours of winter power usage with one hour's summer production.
